Hello,

I got a pair of adult blue fijis iguanas last month.
When picked them up, the animals were very tame and absolutely relaxed and were feeding hibiscus flowers from my hand.
Now, one month later at their new home, they still feed very sad and are always hiding, when I enter the room.
The loose some weight and I think about to visit the vet.

I hope that you can help me.

regards
David

Hello David,
nice to meet you here.
This is a normal reaction for adult Fiji Iguanas. They do not like to change their home, especially the males.
Only a few adults Fijis have no problem, when you put them into a new terrarium.
But most of them will stop feeding (for 1 or 2 month) and become very shy.
The best is to feed them daily, with fresh hibiscus flowers or any other prefer food they like and leave them alone.
Do not handle them until they settle down (also I would not take them to the vet), only when they totaly stop feeding!
You can only try to feed them insects (waxmoth larve or zophobas) from the tweezer.
It is also very important that they will not dehydrate, mist them daily for two or three times and if they start licking up water then try to give them enough.

It is always better to buy a young pair and to rise them up, as to get an adult pair (older then 2 years).
This will always be a problem and some will never settle down again and die.
I always tell my customers to put them in a terrarium at 14-18 month of age, where they can stay for their life.
For better understanding: in their natural habitat the males choose a tree, where they will stay for their life.
I wish you and your animals all the best and hope they will settle down early!
Greetings
Juergen

Hello, just a quick update.
the females started feeding and has now settled down.
But the male did not, I tried to feed him insects and greens from hand/tweezer but he totally refused feeding.
He died last week. :(
Greetings
David
